DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the disassembly, repair, modification, remanufacture and trouble shooting of the railroads roadway maintenance equipment machinery and their various operating and control systems. This includes the hydraulic systems and their associated components, pumps, valves, motors, filters and hoses, etc.; pneumatic air systems including compressors, control valves, air braking systems and dryers, etc.; gasoline and diesel engine overhaul, fuel systems, diagnostics and tune-up, etc.; driveline components, axles, bearings, ring and pinions, springs, roller chains and sprockets, etc.; final and planetary drive systems, disassembly and overhaul, gear reduction assemblies, disassembly and overhaul and all other structural and working components.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • HS diploma or GED
  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow and sleet)
  • Available to work full-time (40 hrs/wk) subject to overtime, on-call and alternate shifts that may include weeknights, weekends and holiday    
  • Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs frequently
  • Able to visually distinguish colors – red, blue, green, yellow and lunar (clear light)
  • 4 years minimum of verifiable mechanical work experience or training
  • 1 year minimum of verifiable training and/or experience working with gasoline and diesel engines on large, industrial equipment
  • 3 months minimum of verifiable training and/or experience with electrical and/or gas welding
  • 1 year minimum of verifiable training and/or experience with electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic diagrams and schematics
  • Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling
  • Able to perform work on uneven surfaces; frequently climb ladders, get on/off equipment and work from various heights including making repairs on top of heavy equipment and trucks
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise and fumes; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, lift, walk, stand, sit for extended time; and use hand tools

Training: Company-paid on-the-job training including preparation, equipment and expenses to obtain CDL as needed.

Relocation: Assistance not available.

Work Conditions: Extreme all-weather conditions; uneven surfaces; safety sensitive work environment.

Probationary Period: 60 days.

Seniority District Transfers: Per union agreement, seniority-based, requires Director approval.

Shifts/Hours: Full-time, subject to alternating shifts, nights, on-call, weekends, overtime, holidays.  Work weeks are 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, typically.

Union:  International Association of Machinists

Dues: Per union agreement; membership and dues required.
