Airgas USA, LLC. the nations leading distributor of industrial, medical and specialty gases and welding supplies, has an AREA OPERATIONS MANAGER position open at our CHARLESTON, WV location.

JOB SUMMARY:      Supports the manufacture and distribution of packaged and bulk gases in the assigned regional area locations.  Supports the coordination of maintenance, safety, compliance, capital expenditures and operations budgeting for the assigned regional area locations.   



  • Support area and local managers with operations and operations personnel so that area and regional performance targets are met or exceeded.  This may include hiring, training, motivating, planning and directing work, managing performance and resolving associate issues in compliance with company policies.  Position may have direct reports.


  • Works with the area safety manager to coordinate the procedures required for compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, FDA, and state regulations.


  • Reviews production orders and schedules to obtain product data such as types, quantities, specifications of products, and scheduled delivery dates in order to plan efficient and cost effective operations that meet customers’ product needs and customer satisfaction.


  • Resolves operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and minimum delays.


  • Ensures adequate cylinder supply to meet customer needs.


  • Assists with development of capital expenditure budget and coordinates capital expenditures once proper approvals have been received.


  • Develops, implements and revises, as needed, standard operational practices. 


  • Travel in regional area up to 50% time.


  • Other duties as assigned.

 QUALIFICATIONS  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Has completed a Bachelor's degree and five to ten years of related experience, or has an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Also required is a thorough knowledge of the following areas: compliance with applicable federal/state regulations, gases and related hardgoods, truck and trailer loading limits, cylinder markings, test dates, pressure ratings, ICC markings, placarding, hazardous material classifications, DOT driver qualifications and record keeping, vehicle purchasing and maintenance requirements, accident reporting, and safety and compliance.   Industrial gas cylinder plant, specialty gas lab, acetylene plant, LPG cylinder filling, and/or bulk propane delivery experience is desired.


Has the ability to analyze, read, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.  Is able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Is able to communicate in standard business style and grammar.  Has the ability to effectively present information to region management, public groups, and current or potential customers.


Understands mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inferences.   Has the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Is able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Is able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, use a PC or calculator, or feel and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 25 to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to noise from office machinery and production plant equipment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, but may be moderate and require personal protective equipment.
